Driver runs off after 3-car crash on Westside

Police say they broke off chase before fugitive ran red light

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police are looking for a driver who took off running after he was involved in a three-car crash at the intersection of Cassat Avenue and Post Street on the Westside just after noon Thursday.

There were no injuries as a result of the crash.

According to witnesses and the people involved in the crash, a silver Hyundai sedan was headed north on Cassat, ran a red light and T-boned a silver Mercury Grand Marquis going east on Post Street through the intersection. The rotation caused the cars to hit a small, orange car stopped at the red light heading west on Post.

A witness told Channel 4 the driver of the Hyundai fled on foot and police were searching for him.

Police initially said they were not chasing the Hyundai, but later told Channel 4 that they were pursuing the driver wanted on an outstanding warrant, but broke off the chase before the wreck.

Police said the man crashed about four or five blocks after they stopped pursuing him.

"I did hear an emergency vehicle, but I didn't see one anywhere, so I thought, 'Well, maybe it's too far away. I'll go ahead and go through,'" said Kathy Brett, who was involved in the crash.

Brett said as soon as she got to the middle of the intersection, the Hyundai ran through the red light and T-boned her car, causing her to slam into the other vehicle that was already stopped on Post.

"I'm glad to be here," she said.

The wanted man -- who police have not named -- was still at large as of late Thursday afternoon.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office traffic homicide detectives were investigating the wreck.
