Drive-by suspect charged with attempted murder
Jacksonville police say victims identified 22-year-old ex-con as gunman
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After several of the victims of Wednesday's drive-by shooting identified Carnell Davis as the gunman, the 22-year-old was arrested and charged with attempted murder, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Channel 4 has learned that Davis was released from prison in May and has been arrested three previous times in the last six months.
Five people were shot in front of a small store at the intersection of Tyler and Windle streets in the New Town neighborhood of Northwest Jacksonville.
Breon Allen, Caron Black, Jamar Evans, Dominique Kelsey and Cornelius McNeill were all transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center. They have all since been released.
With information from witnesses that Davis drove past the store in a blue Ford Explorer just before 5 p.m. and fired several shots at people in front of the business, police obtained an arrest warrant. Davis was arrested Thursday evening at an apartment not far from the crime scene and was booked into the Duval County jail.
Davis' brother, Chris Davis, said police arrested the wrong man.
"It's just so messed up how they got my brother charged with this," he said. "I know for a fact. I've been in the street. I know my brother did not do that. And then they put his face on the news and he did not do that."
Channel 4 has learned that Davis has had several previous arrests, including attempted murder in 2008, armed burglary, assault and battery and accessory after the fact the year he turned 18. In September 2009, Davis was sentenced to four years in state prison and released in May of this year.
In June, Davis was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, in August on drug charges and in September for resisting arrest without violence.
Chris Davis said regarding the June arrest, no gun was ever found.
