Man sentenced for trying to kill girlfriend's father

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 21-year-old Flagler County man who tried to kill his girlfriend's father was sentenced Friday to 40 years in prison.

Included in William Copeland's sentence is a 25-year minimum-mandatory sentence, which he must serve day for day.

Copeland was convicted last month of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, a life felony; aggravated battery with a firearm and causing great bodily harm, a first-degree felony; and shooting into a building, a second-degree felony.

In May 2011, Copeland asked an unwitting friend to give him a ride to his girlfriend's house. He rang the doorbell and as his girlfriend answered. He then went to the back of the house and shot her father.
