"When they got here, they found one black male in his mid to late 40s lying unresponsive on the ground," Waters said. "Rescue was called. He was transported to Shands Jacksonville, where he was pronounced dead."

Waters said some residents in the area heard several gunshots. When police arrived, they found the body of the man lying on the ground outside.

The man, whose name has not been released, was not a transient and officers were working to determine where he lived.

Neighbors gathered near the scene Tuesday morning and expressed concern to Channel 4.

"It's a shame, really. It's really a shame because you got people out here," Wilbert Staten said. "You've got children that play in this neighborhood and you've got so many churches around in the neighborhood, too."

According to police, no suspects were in custody.

"Next step is to canvass and gather information," Waters said. "Talk to as many witnesses as we can."
