Man who tried to buy AK-47 sentenced to 5 years

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 29-year-old Jacksonville man was sentenced Tuesday to five years in federal prison for making a false statement to a federally licensed firearms dealer.

A federal jury found Antwan Cameron guilty in October.

According to testimony presented at trial, Cameron tried to buy a Century Arms 7.62x39mm rifle from Shooters Firearms and Accessories of Jacksonville. Cameron lied on the required Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives paperwork and claimed that he had never been convicted of a domestic violence offense.

A background check by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed that Cameron was a prohibited person, and employees at Shooters stopped the sale.

Cameron received a higher sentence after a judge found that he obstructed justice by trying to contact one of the trial jurors through Facebook.
