Gym employee charged with video voyeurism

36-year-old accused of using cellphone to record woman in tanning booth

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A World Gym employee in St. Augustine was arrested Friday on a charge of video voyeurism.

Jerry Hackney, 36, was arrested after a 25-year-old woman on Wednesday reported a suspicious incident that occurred at the gym on U.S. 1 South.

The victim discovered an employee of the gym had placed his cellphone in a closet to record people getting into and out of a tanning booth, deputies said.

Detectives said they seized Hackney's phone and other evidence to determine if there are any additional victims who were unaware of his actions.

Deputies said additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.

According to a spokesman, Hackney used to be a reserve officer of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

Channel 4 has received a statement from Hackney's former employer, owner of the St. Augustine World Gym Michael Lynch, which states:

"Jerry Lewis Hackney has been discharged from employment at World Gym Fitness Center... He had been employed since 12/07/2012... [and] passed a background screening prior to the start of his employment.

World Gym Fitness is cooperating 100% with the St. John's County Sheriff department, Jerry Hackney will be receiving a trespass warrant banning him from the World Gym Fitness club and property.

World Gym management has reviewed club policies pertaining to cell phones, videos and the privacy policy with our complete staff team.

World Gym Fitness will also be pursing possible charges against Jerry Hackney."
