JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 7-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital from multiple surgeries after she was hit by a car.

It happened on Wednesday near S.P. Livingston Elementary School in New Town.

Brooklyn Christmas was one day away from celebrating Valentine's Day. Instead, she was hospitalized with a compound fracture to her leg.

"I was walking with my sister and a car came and it swerved and it hit her," said Cheyenne Key, Brooklyn's older sister.

Key said the two were on their way home from school when it happened.

"I turned around and she's on the floor rolling over crying," said Key.

The driver got out of his car, checked on the 7-year-old, and took off, Key said. It happened just yards away from her school.

"When he asked me, ‘Is everything all right?' he got back in the car and sped off. I was crying. I was scared… because it happened all at once and I was just shocked," said Key.

As police continue to search for the driver, Brooklyn is recovering at Wolfson Children's Hospital.

"Broken leg... it punctured the bone, it punctured through the back and that's where all the surgery is being done," said Key.

Victoria Christmas said her daughter is resilient and is in good spirits. She said she wants the person who hit her child to do the right thing.

"I just want whoever did it to come forward or to get caught because I was told this is the second child that this has happened to in that area in the last three weeks," said Christmas.
