Daytona Speedway officials, NASCAR update crash investigation

Fiery crash during Daytona 500 weekend injured more than 2 dozen

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR and Daytona International Speedway held a news conference Wednesday to discuss the fiery crash at the speedway during the weekend of the Daytona 500.

More than two dozen fans were in the stands during crash in the last lap at the Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway, sending debris flying. Several fans were seriously injured but no one was killed.

Since the February crash, NASCAR has launched an investigation, including re-enacting the crash and looking at the placement of the gates at the track.

NASCAR said on Wednesday they will install cables across the back of the cross over-gates, installing tethering between the gate frame and posts to the new cables, won't be moving seats on the front stretch and will have 8 crossover gates at Daytona International Speedway.

NASCAR said they have an issue with the way the car disintegrated when it made contact with the crossing gate.

The new enhancements to the track will be made before the Coke Zero in July.
