People wait in line overnight for free Krispy Kreme

Cassat Avenue store reopening

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – People waited in line up to 36 hours for free doughnuts at the rebuilt Krispy Kreme on Cassat Avenue on the Westside.

Channel 4 photojournalist Chris Shriver estimated about 150 people were in line before 5 a.m. on Monday.

Justin Hudson was the first person in line. He told Channel 4 he lined up for the free doughnuts on Sunday at 6 p.m.

Hudson is receiving a free dozen Krispy Kreme donuts every week for a year.  The next 99 customers in line get a free dozen every month for a year and a Krispy Kreme T-shirt.

The store held its grand opening Tuesday at 6 a.m. The old store closed at the same location in 2005. The $600,000 remodel is changing the inside and outside look of the doughnut shop.

The store is about 400 square feet smaller than the old store because the new bakery equipment is smaller and more efficient.
