JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four people, including a 6-year-old boy, were in critical condition, and three others were hospitalized in a crash involving a pedestrian on Interstate 295 at the Alden Road overpass Sunday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
State troopers said 37-year-old Paul Carney was walking in the right emergency lane of I-295 southbound just before 8 p.m. and two cars were traveling in the right lane. Troopers said the first car, a Volkswagen Jetta, stopped in the right travel lane to assist or converse with Carney, and the front of the second vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, struck the rear of the Jetta.

Troopers said the Jetta pushed Carney into a concrete barrier wall.
Carney was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries.
All three in the Jeep were also taken to UF Health with critical injuries. They were Christina Leeds, 30, Roberty Bryson, 36, and Robert Bryson Jr., 6.
The three in the Jetta were also hospitalized. Ricardo Andreu, 40, and Ana Andreu, 35, suffered serious injuries. Sara Andreu, 3, suffered minor injuries.
Troopers said the girl in the Jetta was restrained with a child safety seat in the rear of the car. They said the boy in the Jeep was unrestrained in the rear seat.
Troopers said everyone in the Jetta was wearing a seat belt. They said no one in the Jeep was wearing a seat belt.
FHP said charges are pending further investigation.
