$19M baseball complex proposed in Middleburg

Clay County asphalt plant proposal to be heard Tuesday night

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – The Clay County Commission's economic development committee has recommended an agreement between the commission and the Clay Community Development Authority that would set aside $19 million for a proposed baseball complex in Middleburg.

The recommendation will be taken up at the commission's Aug. 5 meeting.

Among those speaking in favor of the complex was former Jaguar Tony Boselli. Critics say it will never generate the tourism dollars envisioned by the developers.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday night, the Clay County Planning Commission will take up a controversial proposal for an asphalt plant south of Green Cove Springs.

Gustafson's wants to rezone 67 acres of its property off County Road 15A to allow for construction of the plant.

Nearby residents have been steadfastly opposed, citing heavy traffic, odors and noise concerns.
