Man commits suicide before deputies serve warant

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – Police are investigating after deputies say they discovered a 51-year-old man dead inside of a garage in Clay County.

Deputies said they found William Thomas after entering his home inside the Magnolia Point subdivision in Green Cove Springs. They believe at some point Tuesday he committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Thomas was wanted on a warrant for aggravated domestic battery against his wife, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes Tuesday night after deputies said there was a chance Thomas was armed. Because the homes are so close together, deputies said evacuations were necessary to ensure they were safe.

The Sheriff's Office SWAT team was on standby about one mile away in case deputies said they were needed.

The Green Cove Springs Police Department is now in charge of the death investigation.
