Bicyclist struck by car dies

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man in his 20s who was fighting for his life after police said he was hit by a car Tuesday night in the Regency area has died.

At about 9:45 Tuesday night, police said, two young men were crossing Monument Road from the Regency Mall going towards the Army-Navy Outdoors store.

The victim was riding a bike while a 15-year-old boy was walking with him. According to police, a car struck the bicycle while they were crossing Monument Road.

"A white Chevy Impala was going northbound on Monument Road and struck the bicyclist, the pedestrian did not get struck. The bicyclist was sent to UF Health with life-threatening injuries," said Detective D.B. Edmonds with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide Unit.

The bicyclist was in critical condition at UF Health Jacksonville, where he died Wednesday. The 15-year-old boy was unharmed in the incident.

The names of the two young men, and the exact age of the victim have not been released by police. Officers have also not released the identity of the driver who hit the bicyclist.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident and possible charges against the driver of the car are unknown.
