Police say phone records led to teenage killer

Darell Moore arrested Tuesday in June 5 murder

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police say cell phone records led them to arrest the teenager accused of shooting and killing AJ McGauley on June 5.

McGauley's mother told Channel 4 that the arrest will make it easier to move on, but it still doesn't take away the pain she feels since losing her son.

"Who gave you that power to take someone's life? Because you're not god, you're not God, so no matter what the situation may have been, you had no right to take my child's life," said Sherri McGauley.

Darell Moore, 17, was arrested for killing McGauley's 18-year-old son.

"Oh I will be at every court hearing because I want justice for my child. I want to know exactly what happened to my baby and why," said McGauley.

AJ McGauley was shot and killed at 10:30 on the night of June 5 while he was riding his bike on Carleon Road, just a half mile from his home. Detectives said the last person to call AJ the night he died was Darell Moore.

Police said Moore made several calls and texts immediately after the killing. Police also interviewed a friend of the suspect who said Moore came to his house that night and asked to wash his hands with bleach. While a man was seen running from the scene, police initially weren't sure if this was a random killing or someone targeted the victim.

"He did make implicating statements, as well as text messages, and also talked about what he did," said JSO Assistant Chief Chris Butler. "(We) also have witnesses that place him at the scene at the time of the crime.

Butler said the shooting was part of a drug-related robbery and narcotics were found at the scene.

Moore was arrested last Tuesday and booked into the Duval County jail. His arrest was announced on Monday.

While witnesses had seen several people fleeing from the scene, police are not looking for any additional suspects at this time.

"Just seek God and ask him to direct me and keep moving, keep pressing because that's what AJ would have wanted. He wouldn't have wanted me standing here sad, crying, crying everyday because I miss him so much. He wouldn't have wanted that," said McGauley.
