JTA extends free Skyway service for 1 year

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Riding the Jacksonville Transportation Authority Skyway around downtown will remain free for at least another year.

The JTA board voted on that Thursday night.

The fare-free service started with a Channel 4 investigation. In February 2012, Channel 4's Jim Piggott revealed people walking through broken turnstiles to avoid the 50-cent charge.

Once JTA waived the fare, it saw a boost in ridership.

Now the authority will extend the free service until Sept. 31, 2014.

The Skyway hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on weekends only for special events.
