JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Investigators are trying to determine what led to the stabbing death of a 26-year-old in the back parking lot of a Baymeadows apartment complex just after 7 a.m. Sunday.
Police say the man was stabbed after an argument at the Avesta complex on Old Baymeadows Road. The man, who hasn't been identified, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police have a person of interest in custody, but say that person is not a suspect at this point.
There were witnesses in the apartment complex at the time and police are hoping to determine who did this.
"We do have a person of interest detained," said Sgt. Michael Paul of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. "That person is being transported to homicide for an interview. We also have witnesses who either know something about a confrontation in the complex, or observed something."
No word on what the victim was doing at the complex, or if he even lives there. Investigators said it appears only two people were involved in the argument.
"We know there was some argument between the two parties which led to the stabbing," Paul said.
"We haven't been having any murders or anything," said a resident. "This has been a quiet complex."
One woman who lives in the apartments said she worries about young men around the area getting into trouble.
"It's just hard trying to speak to the young men out here," the woman said. "I'm just really sad to hear the young man died."
Anyone with any information about the crime is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
