Stolen Monte Carlo found in Ribault River

Tip leads JSO to discover car in river

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After spending more than a day stuck in the murky waters of the Ribault River, police say a black 2001 Monte Carlo is now back on dry land thanks to a tip.

"A citizen spotted the vehicle inside the Ribault River here in Riverview Park," said Sgt. Arthur Webb of JSO. "They called the police. We came here and accessed the situation and called out our dive team."

Police said the car's journey began at a Lem Turner convenience store Friday night. Two men pointed a gun at a 73-year-old man and demanded the keys to his car.

Authorities said they don't know what the men did with the car from there, but soon, it ended up in the Ribault River.

JSO said the thieves really wanted to make sure the car was gotten rid of. They said a cement block was stuck underneath the gas pedal.

This is the second stolen car found in Jacksonville's waters this week. Police said the search for a stolen Jeep Liberty led them to a boat ramp near the 8900 block of San Jose Boulevard.

Police didn't find the Jeep, instead, they found a different stolen car.

Police said this is a good time to remind drivers to be on guard.

"As usual, we want the community to be aware of their surroundings and be careful," said Webb.
