Event highlights homes in Old Arlington
"Arlington Mod & More" a tour and symposium
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It's one of Jacksonville's most historic neighborhoods; Old Arlington and there is an event that will give you the chance to explore and learn more about the areas homes.
The Jacksonville Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and Old Arlington Inc. have partnered together to host Arlington Mod & More, a home tour of mid century modern homes in the Old Arlington area.
Ann Burt, past president and board member of Old Arlington says, "The building boom that began in Arlington with the opening of the Mathews Bridge in 1953 provided Arlington with some of the finest examples of mid century modern architecture in the city."
Organizers say this tour will provide an opportunity to learn more about this architectural style and to visit some very fine and unique homes built in the 1950s and 60s.
The tour is next Saturday, November 16th and begins with an educational symposium at Arlington Presbyterian Church on Arlington Road near Bruce Park. Dr. Wayne Wood will be a featured speaker. Registration opens at 9:00 a.m., symposium begins at 9:30 and the self-guided home tour begins at 11:00 and runs until 4:00. Maps and home information will be provided with your ticket.
Burt says, "Tour goers will have the opportunity to see a home designed by Robert Ernest, whose short but brilliant career ended with his death at age 29, two homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright protégé, Robert Broward, and Geodesica, the Round House featured on the 1959 Parade of Homes."
Burt says the tour will even have some charming apartments in Riverton Tower at Jones College.
"All are fine examples of midcentury modern architecture and a real treat to see," Burt says.
