JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Because of our area food banks, hundreds of homeless people in our area were able to get a good breakfast this Thanksgiving.
Across the city, The Salvation Army provided food for 1,500 families and Second Harvest Food Bank donated enough food to feed 2,500 families.
One of the recipients is the Clara White Mission who will feed 500 people this morning for a hot Thanksgiving breakfast.
For 19 years, the mission has been feeding hundreds of people living on the streets in Jacksonville a holiday breakfast.
Clara White President Ju'Coby Pittman said while Thanksgiving is all about the turkey dinner, breakfast should not be overlooked.
"It is the most nutritious breakfast or meal. We want to kick that off because no one else is really doing that most of the agencies in the community or providing either lunch or dinner," said Pittman.
Food was donated by The Second Harvest Food Bank and Cisco Foods as well as members of the community.
"We have been soliciting support and we have families that pay for the food for the whole month," said Pittman.
Many of the people who will be in the dining room, preparing the meal once were homeless themselves. They are now enrolled in the culinary arts program.
"It's one hand helping another. A lot of the students who are enrolled in the program were either previously homeless and/or low income and now they're giving back and thanking the Clara White mission for being a safety net during the holiday time," said Pittman.
Breakfast is severed until 8 a.m. Thanksgiving Morning.
