Kingsland kids get to 'Shop with a Cop'

Children in Kingsland paired up with officers, firefighters, for shopping spree

KINGSLAND, Ga. – Deserving children in Kingsland were treated to an early Christmas on Saturday morning.

The Kingsland Police Department held their first annual "Shop with a Cop," pairing kids up with police officers and firefighters for an exciting shopping spree.

Around 20 kids ages 5 to 12 were selected by the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services for a day of pampering.

The kids arrived at the Kingsland patrol division and were treated to breakfast provided by Kingsland Chick-fil-A.

After eating and visiting with the Santa Cow, the kids were taken to the K-Mart, which sponsored the event as part of its K-Mart Cares program.  Each child was allowed to spend $100 on toys or clothes of their choice.

Each child was escorted on their shopping trip by either a police officer, firefighter or paramedic.  Next, they visited the Kingsland Fire Department, where they explored fire trucks, police cars and ambulances and tried on various pieces of gear.

A visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus rounded out the morning where the kids got additional gifts from a local Scentsy representative. Each child received a donated Scentsy Buddy and a stocking full of goodies.

Transportation was provided through school buses provided by the Camden County School Board.

Donations to support the first annual event were from various people in the community as well as churches.

Kingsland Police Lt. Todd Tetterton says another unique part of the event was many officers donated to the event. Officers who donated were allowed to grow out a goatee for the month of December, typically something officers are not allowed to do.
