CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – Two people were stabbed Sunday at the Orange Park Mall in Clay County.

Police report the altercation happened while a mother and her husband were dropping a child off with the child's biological father.

During the fight, the child's father produced a weapon, stabbed the mother and step-father and then left the scene.

The two victims sustained serious injuries from the knife attack. Both people were taken to Orange Park Medical Center. The mother is in good condition with her child. The step-father is in serious but stable condition.

Lieutenant Chris Coldiron with the Clay County Sheriff's Office said a shopper alerted police.

"It was actually called in by a person that was in the parking lot. We had officers at the mall as part of the holiday security plan we had at place, so we were able to respond quickly and provide safety to everyone involved. That also aided in us being able to apprehend him as quickly as we did," said Coldiron.

Coldiron said while this was a domestic issue, it is always important to be alert.

"We always need good witnesses in situations like that we can't control everyone's actions and even police presence sometimes doesn't prevent a domestic situation from occurring," said Coldiron.
