Woman, 23, accused of killing baby

Police: Mother shook boy, hit his head on crib

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 23-year-old woman is charged with murder in the death of her nearly 3-month-old son in September.

Jacksonville police said Stephanie Schoonover shook the baby on Sept. 6 and hit his head on a crib. The boy died two days later.

Rescuers called to the home on Sago Avenue in Oceanway found Logan Hancock unresponsive.

The Medical Examiner recently ruled the death a homicide by blunt force trauma.

Police said Schoonover confessed to shaking the boy and hitting the boy's head on the crib out of frustration, and the Medical Examiner said the boy's injury was consistent with that.

Investigators said Schoonover lived with her boyfriend, who is Logan's father. They said Schoonover was the only adult home at the time but three other children were there.

Shortly after the incident, the Department of Children and Families placed them in protective custody. They are now with relatives. DCF has been providing services as well as counseling.

Schoonover has no previous criminal record.
