Nelson has 'no patience' for Florida unemployment website problems
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sen. Bill Nelson spoke Friday about his efforts to get the problems with Florida's unemployment website solved.
Nelson first asked the U.S. Department of Labor to investigate the website's problems in October.
Earlier this month, when the problems still hadn't been solved and people were still having issues applying for unemployment compensation, he wrote to the Labor Department again.
Nelson said the labor secretary then came down with a team to show the state what to do.
While meeting with reporters in Jacksonville on Friday afternoon, Nelson expressed his displeasure about the situation.
"I have no patience with a company that has charged the taxpayer tens of millions of dollars and then their website doesn't work, to the enormous penalty of people," Nelson said. "We're talking about people's lives here. And so I think the state of Florida ought to sock it to 'em."
Nelson said he's made similar statements about the federal health insurance website, saying someone ought to be fired over its problems.
The senator also gave an update on the efforts to fight skyrocketing flood insurance premiums. He said a vote is scheduled for Monday in the Senate and he believes it will pass.
But Nelson said homeowners will have to turn up the heat on members of the House to make sure it passes there.
