Officials in Nassau County are keeping a close eye on the Thomas B. Shave Jr. Bridge between the mainland and Amelia Island, checking for any signs of ice.
Nassau County Emergency Management said there are no plan to close the bridge that carries A1A, also known as State Road 200, but were monitoring it along with other bridges and roadways as a precaution due to icy conditions.
In Folkston, County Administrator Al Crace said Charlton County was lucky to have been mostly spared for the wicked winter weather that's plagued residents to the north.
"We've been lucky, people 50 miles north of here and all the way up they've had to deal with all of these weather problems freezing and the real challenges and they've had to be busy," Crace said.
Crace added that officials will still be watching bridges and roads for icy conditions.
"The biggest risk are the big fly over bridges where they cross the railroads or rivers at the state line." Those tall bridges have all that draft beneath will freeze first because that air underneath is cold." Same problem they have in Jacksonville and different places they have rivers."
Residents and visitors are urged to remain vigilant and use caution on roadways, due to the possibility of freezing rain and sleet in the area.
Residents and visitors should also remember the "Five P's" of cold weather safety.
They are: protecting people, plants, pets, exposed pipes, and practicing fire safety.
