Man hit, killed on Mayport Road

FHP: Alcohol not a factor, pedestrian did not yield to oncoming traffic

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man in his 60s died after being struck by a truck in the area of Mayport Road and Atlantic Boulevard Wednesday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

State troopers said 60-year-old Kurt Zeiger, from Jacksonville Beach, was walking westbound on the entrance lane from Mayport Road to Atlantic Boulevard around 6:11 p.m.

According to an FHP report, Zeiger attempted to cross the roadway, not yielding to oncoming traffic.

A White 2010 Ford F150 truck was traveling southbound on Mayport Road, approaching the right entrance lane to Atlantic Boulevard, according to FHP.

The truck was unable to brake in time and struck Zeiger, according to an FHP report.

The driver of the truck has been identified as 56-year-old Richard Moriarty of Fernandina Beach.

Preliminary investigation results from FHP show Moriarty was wearing a seat belt and that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
