Lake City police warn of magazine sales fraud

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Over the course of the last week, the Lake City Police Department has received several complaints and taken two reports associated with people selling fraudulent magazine subscriptions in the area.

In one filed report, an elderly woman said a young white woman with pink in her hair come to her door to sell her magazine subscriptions. The salesperson was invited in the residence and once inside she asked for a drink and also to use the restroom. While the homeowner was still in the kitchen, and distracted, the suspect went into her purse and stole her cash.

The ongoing investigation discovered the company these door-to-door salespeople represent is fake.  Police the organizers of this fraud are recruiting young people or people in need to solicit door-to-door and sell fake magazine subscriptions. While inside the residence, they may also commit thefts of money or property.

"We encourage all residents to avoid purchasing any door-to-door product from anyone who is not from the Lake City area or those without verifiable references," wrote Officer Craig Strickland. "Pressured sales and a lack of references or residence in the county should be immediate red flags. Students from area schools who are doing fundraisers are informed in their packets not to go door-to-door with their sales."

If you have been a victim of this scam, please contact the Lake City Police Department immediately at 386-752-4343 and ask to speak with Investigator David Greear.
