Former Jacksonville officer, 50, dies

Officer Mark Larson was shot several times by a suspect he had pulled over in 1993. He lost a forearm after the shooting and never fully recovered from his injuries. He died in March at age 50.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A former Jacksonville police officer who lost a forearm after a confrontation with a suspect has died.

Mark Larson died last week at St. Vincent's Medical Center. He was 50 years old.

In 1993, Larson pulled over Willie Murphy in Northwest Jacksonville. When Murphy wouldn't cooperate or step out of the car, Larson opened the door to get him out and Murphy took off.

Larson held on and shot Murphy several times. Murphy died when his car slammed into a tree.

Larson was dragged and eventually fell off the car. His forearm had to be amputated because of his injuries.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
