Police: Jacksonville boy, 11, shot and killed by 12-year-old in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Police in Savannah are investigating a shooting that killed an 11-year-old boy from Jacksonville.

Officers and family members said Montrez Burroughs was playing with his 12-year-old nephew at a relative's house Friday night when the picked up a gun and it went off. 

Burroughs was pronounced dead at the hospital. 

Police said the 12-year-old was charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct and possession of a firearm by a person under 18.

"No one from the family came to sympathize with his mother or grieve with her," the victim's aunt, Shaleena Hamilton, told WTOC in Savannah. "He was real loving, caring; liked to run and play ball."

Funeral arrangements for Burroughs have not been completed.

The 12-year-old was being held at a regional youth detention center as the investigation continues.
