3 injured in Clay County wrong-way crash

FHP: 84-year-old driver traveling on wrong side of road, collided with car

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – Three people sustained serious injuries after a crash in Clay County, where the Florida High Patrol said one driver was traveling on the wrong side of the road.

According to an FHP report, the crash happened Wednesday around 9:45 p.m. on Highway 17 near County Road 209.

A Honda Civic driven by 54-year-old Kevin Douylliez was traveling southbound on Highway 17, when a Volkswagen Beetle, traveling on the wrong side of the road, collided into the Honda, according to FHP.

Vickie Matthews, 74, was driving the Beetle with 84-year-old Encarnacion Hodges in the passenger's seat.

After the crash, the Honda ran off the road and hit the guardrail.

Both drivers and the passenger were transported to Orange Park Medical Center with serious injuries.

Troopers are unsure why Matthews was traveling on the wrong side of the roadway. Charges are pending against her.

All drivers and passengers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, and alcohol was not a factor, according to FHP.
