FHP: Driver may have had medical emergency

FRUIT COVE, Fla. – A 43-year-old Orange Park man and former Clay County deputy died Monday morning after driving off the road and striking some trees in the Fruit Cove area, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

State troopers said Robert Boykin may have had a medical emergency while driving northbound on State Road 13 near Riverwalk Boulevard at about 8:50 a.m.

They said his car struck a guardrail, then two trees.

Boykin was taken to Baptist Medical Center South, where he died.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office said Boykin left the agency in February following 17 years of service.

He joined the Sheriff's Office in 1997 as a patrol deputy.

"Boykin was a well-liked member who served as both a deputy and as a detective, including stints in Homicide Investigations, State Attorney Office investigator and Warrants," the Sheriff's Office said in a news release. "Boykin concluded his career with our agency as a Detention Bureau Detective. Our agency is saddened by his sudden passing and we extend our sincere condolences to his family."
