Jacksonville's Coast Guard command center received a call at 8:22 p.m. from someone who had spotted the kayakers from shore.

The crew immediately launched in a Coast Guard vessel and retrieved the people and their kayak. The kayakers declined medical treatment at the Coast Guard base.

"These kayakers did the right thing by wearing their life jackets and standing on top of their overturned boat while they waited for help," Sector Jacksonville command duty officer Lt. j.g. John Paul Monreal-Berner,said in a news release. "Boaters who stay with overturned vessels are much easier for rescuers or other nearby boaters to see than those who try to swim to safety."
