Boy taken to nearby hospital

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A 20-month-old boy was struck by a sport utility vehicle Monday afternoon on Daytona Beach, according to officials.

WKMG-TV reports the accident happened around 2 p.m., just south of Ormond Beach.

Witnesses said the boy was dragged by the SUV and had to be pulled from under the vehicle.

"Mama turned her head for a split second and the next thing her little boy ran out," said Kevin Cobb, who saw the accident happen. "She turned around to chase him, but he beat her out into traffic."

The child was moving and crying on a stretcher as emergency personnel placed him into an ambulance, witnesses said.

The boy was taken to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach. The boy's mother said he was discharged from the hospital Monday evening and was doing fine.
