Pedestrian dead in Jacksonville Beach hit-and-run, police say

Pedestrian hit, killed in early morning crash

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street early Saturday morning.

The incident happened at 1:43 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of North 13th Avenue and State Road A1A.

Investigators said Daniel Stein, 25, was struck by a black vehicle, believed to be a Mercedes that may have damage as a result of the crash.

Stein later died as he was taken to UF Health Hospital.

The Jacksonville Beach Police Department is asking the public for help in identifying the vehicle and its owner.

Stein's friend Will Halstead hopes someone who knows something about the driver or car will come forward.

"Just to walk across the street and for that to happen, it's just disgusting," Hadlstead said.

"Everyone is at a loss for words. I hope they catch the guy. There was absolutely no remorse. They didn't even stop."

Halstead said Stein was heading back toward his apartment with friends at the time of the accident. They were just a couple blocks away from their destination.

Halstead described hearing the sound and the impact of the crash from his room.

"I couldn't even imagine seeing my best friend fly--I mean, I heard it. It was so loud, the impact."

Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 904-270-1667.
