Additional 5% in mayor's budget for community groups

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Groups like Meals On Wheels and Jacksonville Area Legal Aid are keeping a close watch on what the city plans to do with tax dollars.

They're just two of the many groups that rely on some public grants to fulfill its mission of helping people.

Last year organizations faced a big cut from the city, but this year the news is different.

During a meeting of the Public Service Grant Council, the organizations learned that the mayor has an additional 5 percent in his budget for community groups.

How that money will be spent isn't yet known.

The mayor will present his budget Monday morning. The City Council will then have to approve it. That usually happens in September.
