N.C. diner offers 15 percent 'prayer discount'
Pious policy at Mary's Gourmet Diner sparks praise, anger
A diner in North Carolina is sparking anger and praise with its 15 percent "prayer discount."
Customer Jordan Smith told HLN she was pleasantly surprised to find the discount on her receipt for breakfast at Mary's Gourmet Diner in Winston-Salem while on a business trip recently.
She snapped a photo of the receipt and posted it to her Facebook page.
Not surprisingly, it's gone viral.
Shama Blalock, co-owner of the diner, confirmed to NPR that the discount is "for real," and not another social media hoax.
It's given to customers at the discretion of the wait staff.
Many have praised the restaurant for its pious policy, but others have called it discrimination and questioned whether it would be given to customers who offered prayers of the non-Christian variety.
