JSO: Officer fires shots at driver of stolen car

No one injured; 18-year-old taken into custody after pursuit

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An 18-year-old driver pulled over in a stolen car on Leonid Road on the Northside about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday gunned his engine and pulled toward an officer, who fired four shots at the suspect, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Two shots hit the car, but the suspect, 18-year-old Kheilan Haynes (pictured below), was not hit. He then led police on a 3-mile pursuit that ended when another officer hit and disabled the suspect vehicle on Broward Road, police said. When a Taser gun was ineffective, the Haynes ran, but was captured after a short foot chase, police said.

Police said Haynes is a previously convicted felon. He could face several charges, perhaps including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.

The officer who fired the shots was identified as Harold Taylor, a five-year veteran of the department. The officer who disabled the Haynes' vehicle was identified as David Alexander.

JSO Assistant Chief Chris Butler said the car was stolen in June and a semi-automatic handgun was found on the front seat. He said it doesn't appear the gun was pointed at the officer, but the incident is still under investigation.

"I don't have a reason why the suspect revved his engine and drove toward the officer and took us on a pursuit," Butler said. "It's just one of those dangerous things our officers face every day."

Police said that after the car is processed for evidence, it will be returned to its original owner.
