ORLANDO, Fla. – The family of the 22-year-old woman killed by an Orlando police officer's stray bullet told Local 6 they are heartbroken.
Maria Godinez was caught in crossfire while she and a friend were out Monday night at Vixen Bar in downtown Orlando.
Godinez lived in Cocoa, but her family said she and a friend were spending the weekend in Orlando and that she was supposed to return Tuesday.
"We are really sad with what happened; nobody wishes that happened," said Edvin Godinez, Maria Godinez's cousin.
Family described her as a hard worker. She went to Cocoa High School, worked at a restaurant and was getting ready to go to college.
"We join her friends and family as they mourn her loss," said Orlando Police Chief John Mina.
It was an officer's stray bullet that hit her as they responded to reports that a man, Kody Roach, was armed with a gun outside Vixen Bar.
"As you can see right now, the whole family right now is heartbroken. I really, I still can't believe this happened," said Edvin Godinez.
Maria Godinez's family members met outside a Cocoa home to comfort each other, especially her mother.
"She's in shock right now, you know, we're trying to make (her) calm down. She can't even drink water. She's pretty much shocked," said Edvin Godinez.
Roach is still in the hospital after being shot. As soon as he is released he will head to the Orange County Jail on charges of carrying a concealed weapon.
