St. Johns Co. to house mobile animal response unit

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – The St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners announced this week that the county will become home to one of Florida's Mini Mobile Animal Response Equipment Units.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is partnering with the county to operate one of the Mini-MARE Units out of St. Johns County.

The unit, operated by the State Agricultural Response Team, is an enclosed trailer that contains bowls, animal crates and a canopy shelter. Animal Control will be able to use the resource to help establish pet friendly sheltering operations during emergencies.

The unit can also be used to house animals that might become lost as a result of a catastrophic disaster. If a large number of animals need to be removed from a property because of animal hoarding or animal cruelty, the unit will also play an important role.

The unit is a regional asset and will be available to neighboring counties on request.
