Clay County settles jail death lawsuit
County agrees to settle family's lawsuit for $2.2 million
GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – The family of Daniel Linsinbigler, 19, and the Clay County Sheriff's Office have reached a $2.2 million settlement over a death that happened in the Clay County jail in March 2013.
Linsinbigler died of asphyxia in a restraint chair after being pepper-sprayed in March 2013. He was being held on misdemeanor charges. He was also in a spit mask, according to investigative documents.
The Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide, but an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and State Attorney's Office found no criminal wrongdoing.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office has since changed its policies regarding pepper spray and the spit mask as a result of Linsinbigler's death.
