Man killed in hit-and-run on I95

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A driver was killed Saturday morning in a hit and run crash in St. Johns County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver that was killed as been identified as Rafhel Mahese, 37. The crash happened on Interstate 95 northbound just before the State Road 207 exit.

According to police, a van was pulled over with its hood up. Police believe a white semi truck or motor home clipped the driver. The vehicle also hit the tire and the van's mirror.

The suspect's vehicle has a broken right headlight and possible dark gray transfer paint on the bumper.

Mahese's death is the latest in a series of fatal hit and run accidents to occur in the area. Often, there are no witnesses.

Police say Thursday night, a driver hit and killed Derrick Chadwick, 60, as he crossed San Juan Avenue near Hyde Park Road.

Since January 11, there have been more than 12 hit and runs in Duval County. Nine of those have been fatal.

Mahese's death marks three in St. Johns County.

This comes despite a change in the law that guarantees a mandatory four year prison term for fatal hit and run drivers.

So far, no one as come forward with information regarding Saturday's hit and run. Anyone with information is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 904-825-5080.
