Man, 62, dies in crash avoiding deer

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – A 62-year-old man involved in a single-vehicle crash Sunday night in Putnam County died Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

State troopers said Richard Williams was driving southbound on Crescent Lake Shore Drive about 7:50 p.m. when he swerved to his right to avoid striking a deer. Williams drove his pickup truck off onto the shoulder and struck a tree, troopers said.

He was taken to UF Health Gainesville, where he died about 5 a.m. Monday.

Troopers said Williams was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Troopers said speed, weather and road conditions were not factors.

Williams was wearing a seat belt.
