Car driver cited in day care van crash

9 kids hurt in crash last week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The driver of a car involved in a crash that flipped a day care van last week, injuring nine children in it, was cited with running a stop sign.

Chelsey Lamon, 19, was driving northbound on Labelle Street on the Westside, and the day care van driven by Shantel Sykes, 26, was heading westbound on Hollycrest Drive, according to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

According to the crash report, Lamon said she stopped for the stop sign and tried to "gun" through the intersection. Lamon said when she noticed she was about to hit the van, she tried to swerve to her left to avoid hitting it.

The front her car hit the driver's side of the van close to the rear, according to the report. The rear of the van swung out to the right, the rear tires went into the grass, and the van flipped onto its roof.

All nine children injured were released from hospitals by the next day.

Officials said everyone was wearing a seat belt, but the injuries could have been worse.
