Crane falls off truck, overturns on Blount Island

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A large industrial crane that had just been repaired fell off a flatbed tractor trailer near the entrance to the Blount Island Marine Terminal on the Northside on Tuesday.

Jaxport officials said the truck transporting the crane to the facility was making a U-turn around 9:30 a.m. when the crane, which weighs 106,000 pounds, shifted and toppled over on Dave Rawls Drive.

"The semi that was pulling it is rated for 150,000 pounds," said Lt. Jesse York with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. "We're vry fortunate so far that there were no injuries and it did not interfere with operations at Jaxport."

A portion of the roadway was temporarily closed to allow wreckers to remove the crane from the roadway, police said. The crane is now in a parking area and traffic is not affected.
