Human remains found in St. Johns County


ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Human remains were found late Sunday in a wooded area along State Road 16 east of Interstate 95 in St. Johns County.

Deputies said a teenager found the skeletal remains near a pond while he was looking for earthworms to go fishing.

There were no obvious signs of foul play and the remains were taken to Medical Examiner's Office for identification.

Monday morning the site was still being excavated while St. Johns County Sheriff's Office investigators are going through missing persons reports to help in the identification process.

"These could be the remains of someone who ventured here from another state, was dropped off in a car. It could have had a natural occurrence, where the individual deceased in the woods," said St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Cmdr. Chuck Mulligan.

It could take days to positively identify the remains.
