Church holds food drive

Donations will go to the Mandarin Food Bank

ST. JOHNS, Fla. – People at an area church are helping collect food for the needy. Members of the San Juan Del Rio Church  in St. Johns County collected nearly 1,400 pounds of food this weekend. They hope to collect another 400 pounds before their collection is done Sunday evening. The collected food will be donated to the Mandarin food bank.

"It's a great way to give back to the community through our church," said Cathy Greene who made a donation.

The food drive at San Juan Del Rio Church has been going on for several years. Youth get confirmation hours at the event, others get volunteer hours for their high school.

"It's pretty fun. You get to meet new people and you get to help out other people too," said Chris Hemmen who helped with the food drive.

All the food is in a room at the church where it is separated by category. Pasta, Non-perishable meat, canned fruit and canned vegetables were among some of the other items collected. To get more donations church members are having a competition between the different masses.

"It always feels good. We hope to help everyone in the community. It's a shame that other people don't have food to feed their families. If we have extra I don't mind giving." said Kerry Glidwell as she made a donation.

Parishioners say they look forward to the food drive each year.
