Parents questioned in 4-year-old girl's death

Police suspect abuse played part in child's death

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 4-year-old girl died Friday night after Jacksonville Fire Rescue was called to a Southside home in reference to a medical issue.

JFRD arrived at the Fountains at Deerwood apartments around 8:50 p.m.

"Upon their arrival they were able to quickly figure out that it was more than a medical problem, that there was possible foul play involved," said Sgt. Michael Paul with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JFRD called in the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office to investigate.

The child was taken to Wolfson Children's Hospital where she died.

JSO said two adults and two other kids were at the apartment when they arrived.  The Department of Children and Families took those children into its custody.

"The way we understand it one of the parents in the house called 911 and we are reviewing them to figure out what occurred inside the house and if there was anyone other than the parents and the other children inside the house," said Sgt. Paul.

Police did not know how the abuse happened.

"Without an autopsy I cant say 100%, the child did appear to have physical abuse signs if you will, and the child is deceased right now, so that's what we are going on," said Sgt. Paul.

The parents' names were not immediately released.  JSO said they were cooperating with the investigation.
