Alleged sex act at Matthew W. Gilbert Middle

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Parents with students at Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School got quite a shock Friday when students came home with a letter from the school saying that a sex act may have occurred on campus.

The school said that it was investigating the situation in an attempt to ensure the safety of students and on campus and are working closely with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

"At Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School we have an effective learning environment of which I am very proud to lead. The type of behavior reported to us does not accurately reflect what we have built and maintained at Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School," Principal Jamelle W. Goodwin said.

Goodwin said that he believed that parental contributions in talking with children about the importance of identifying, and reporting inappropriate and criminal behavior is what led to school officials finding out about the incident.
