JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 91-year-old woman has life-threatening injuries after being stabbed by her mentally challenged adoptive son Friday morning.
The son, Luther Charles Richards, Jr., 53, has been arrested and charged with aggravated battery.
Police said at 10:10 a.m. Friday, an off-duty officer working at Baptistl was contacted in the emergency room about a woman who had been stabbed.
The victim, Rose Hardaway, had a stabbing wound to the throat and was taken to UF Health with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities determined the stabbing happened at Hardaway's house on West Angel Lakes Drive, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Other family members were at the house when the stabbing happened and took Hardaway to the hospital upon her request, police said.
Richards left the stabbing scene and went to a mental facility, where he normally attends a program. Officers later found him at the mental facility.
Witnesses were interviewed and provided police with details.
Richards is currently in the custody of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
The Homicide Unit is investigating the incident because of Hardaway's condition.
