Putnam County man accused of attacking girlfriend

PALATKA, Fla. – A 32-year-old man accused of threatening his girlfriend with a rifle and attempting to strangle her was arrested on charges of domestic battery and aggravated assault.

Richard Lucas Halstead, of Palatka, is being held without bond in the Putnam County Jail.

Halstead's girlfriend told Putnam County deputies that Halstead was asleep when she came come Monday and when she tried to wake him up, Halstead became angry, grabbed his girlfriend around the neck and shoved her against a wall. She said she was able to escape, but told deputies Halstead then grabbed a loaded rifle and threatened her. The girlfriend said she was able to escape again, running from the house with her young son.

After police spoke with the victim, Halstead was arrested a the home on charges of domestic battery by strangulation and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
