Robbery suspect shot by Alachua County sheriff's deputy identified

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – An armed robbery suspect who was shot by police Tuesday afternoon after being confronted in the parking lot of the Northside Shopping Center in Gainesville, Florida, has been identified, police say.

Just after 3 p.m. officers with the Gainesville Police Department responded to the Post Office at 1401 N. Main St. after multiple reports of an armed robbery.

According to police, 46-year-old Yowab Ben-Israel entered the business, pulled out a handgun and demanded cash. He fled the area on a bicycle with an undisclosed amount of cash.

GPD requested help from K-9 units with the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, and a deputy K-9 handler spotted a man matching Ben-Israel's description in the Northside Shopping Center parking lot at 2300 N. Main St.

Police said multiple witnesses confirmed that Ben-Israel pulled a gun (pictured) and pointed it at the deputy, who returned fire, striking the man.

Ben-Israel was taken to UF Health/Shands in stable condition.

The GPD and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating at the scene of the shooting.
